Post whiplash headaches or cervicogenic headaches (literally headaches from the neck) appear to have a few different causes. First, the straightening of the neck can cause the head to move forward and this can irritate some nerves at the back of the head. These nerves, the greater occipital and the lesser occipital, can then cause headache. There are also joints in the upper part of the neck (C2-C3) and in the jaw that can refer pain to the head. Finally, areas in several muscles can develop trigger points which can refer pain to the head. |
